Stay Well: Know Your Numbers – Basic Health Check
Cost €60
From approximately the age of 40, it is recommended to have an annual or biannual basic health check.
This is recommended for someone who is well with no chronic medical condition which requires ongoing surveillance.
A basic health check with our nurse includes:
- BMI
- Waist measurement
- Blood pressure
- Diabetes blood test
- Cholesterol check
- Optional: ECG (€30)
Body Mass Index (BMI)
This is a measurement of your weight divided by your height in meters squared. Being overweight or obese is associated with worse health outcomes.
Waist Measurement
Measured at your belly button with a relaxed stomach.
Greater than 80CM for a woman and 94CM for a man is associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Blood Pressure
Sustained high blood pressure puts you at risk of strokes and heart attacks and kidney disease. It usually causes no symptoms. We aim to identify and treat high blood pressure to target to avoid complications in later life.
Normal: 120 / 80
If your blood pressure is above 129/79, you will be invited to book in for a 24 hour BP monitor (€50).
Diabetes
Approximately 6% of the population in Ireland are living with type 2 diabetes. In the first few years it often carries no symptoms. Early diagnosis and management are key to avoid the myriad complications of diabetes.
Cholesterol
A deranged cholesterol profile is implicated in higher risk for stroke and heart disease. Knowing your personal profile will give you the opportunity to adjust your diet if needed.
ECG Electocardiogram (Optional: €30)
This is a tracing of the electrical activity of your heart. There is no need to repeat this annually if you are well.
One of our GPs will review your results and you will be emailed your results and signposted to targeted resources if needed.
If there are any abnormalities, you will be invited to arrange a consultation with the GP.
