Clinic Sláinte Gnéis
Sexual Health Clinic Services
We offer a full screening service for sexually transmitted infections/diseases (STI or
STD), of which there is a lot, and any sexual contact could expose you to.
Unprotected sex, in any form, even just once, could expose you to infection, so for a healthy sexual life taking control of your sexual health is very important.
A lot of the time, you may not even know you have an infection.
Anyone who is, or has been, sexually active at any age, could pick up an STI. Symptoms may never present, or may become noticeable some time after you pick it up. This means you could pass it on to a partner and not realize it.
Testing generally involves a swab test and a blood test.
Infections tested for include :
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhoea
- HIV
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Syphillis
- Genital warts.
Some people do not have any concerns about symptoms of an infection but just wish to get a ‘check up’ to ensure they do not carry any nasty surprises. Others do have symptoms, for example : discharge, rash, lumps, pain, and these all need checking.
It can take time for an STI to test positive after exposure, so if you are concerned you picked something up it would be best to wait for 2 weeks after the encounter before doing any tests.
In this time, if you are worried, you can always see any of our GPs to discuss what you should do.
Results generally take up to 2 weeks. Some require a repeat test after a number of weeks/months.
This is a confidential service, as is every consultation at the Crescent Medical Centre.
